Byron Shire resident Matt Bruce has been issued a demolition order for his tiny house on wheels after council officers deemed it a permanent building, making it subject to building compliance such as water supply, waste disposal, bushfire and flood risk and rates. The tiny house is on his friend’s large block of land which also has a larger, fixed dwelling on the block.
This situation highlights the continued need for education around tiny houses as their own building type and the subsequent law and regulation reforms.
ATHA is working hard to get tiny houses on wheels and skids recognised as a legitimate option but it is a huge job. If you haven’t done so please help our continued efforts by signing our Tiny House petition at www.change.org/tinyhouses and if you are not already an ATHA member please consider joining us to increase our reach and influence.
